The Beginning

Starting is always the hardest part. Fortunately, this is not the beginning; this is an extension of something that has been in the works for a while now.

My name is Chris. Last year I started this small leather goods company- Peartree Leather Co.. I'm obsessed with quality, and that is what spurred on the building of leather accessories. I also have a fascination with my grandfather on my dad's side. My "Papa" was a man who lived in the woods. He split logs for heat, gardened for his food (save his gnarly tin of Tim Horton's coffee), and surrounded himself with nature.

My wife and I are leaving for the summer. We’re picking up and moving ourselves into the woods of Nova Scotia. From there we will live out of a tent. Doing our work under trees, and showering in a stream. This adventure that my wife and I are embarking on is one that naturally seems to flow out of our love for simplicity, utility, and quality.

This is also a great chance for Peartree as a business. A time of transition can be extremely stressful for a small business, and by occupying a calm and quiet space we hope to offset what could be a very crazy time. This is also a chance for us to get a fresh perspective on what we do. We love simple design and what better place to find simplicity than the woods? Our designs will be made in nature and tweaked to fit better into that setting.

This week we started that transition by changing up the leather we’ll be using. Peartree Leather Co. seeks to make some of the best. To accomplish this, we took a trip down to Horween Leather in Chicago. Our new leathers are all earth tones, they’ve been selected to fit this beautiful world we live in. Our items match the dirt we came from and will stay with you until you return to it.

We're both really excited about this opportunity and look forward to sharing it with you all through the summer as we post about our small adventures.
